NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE

The Government have announced further increases in the national minimum wage. From October 2004 the main rate will be £4.85 per hour (currently £4.50).

There is also an increase in the rate for workers aged 18 to 21 to £4.10 (currently £3.80).

The Government have also introduced a rate for 16 to 17 year old workers. From October 2004 this rate will be set at £3.00 per hour. The rate will only apply to workers over the compulsory school age.

The minimum wage rate does not apply to apprentices until they have completed their first year’s apprenticeship and are aged 19 or more.
